Russia Launches Rival Song Contest “Intervision” After Eurovision Ban

Russia has revived the Soviet-era music event “Intervision” as a conservative alternative to Eurovision, featuring 23 countries and emphasising traditional values, after its ban in 2022.

Why Intervision Was Created

After being barred from the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022 due to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia announced the launch of Intervision. The new event is designed as a rival contest, intended to promote “traditional family values” and offer an alternative platform more aligned with Russian political and cultural priorities.

Participants and Format

The contest features 23 countries, including China, India, Brazil, and others deemed friendly to Russia. Unlike Eurovision, Intervision will be judged by a professional jury rather than by public voting. Performances can be in any language, and the winner will receive a grand prize of 30 million rubles.

Broadcast, Criticism, and Political Implications

Organisers say the contest will be shown on Russian television and potentially via online streaming in other countries with a combined population of over 4 billion. Critics view Intervision as a soft power tool for the Kremlin, aimed at reinforcing conservative narratives and values in contrast to what it describes as the “decadence” of the West. Ukraine has condemned the event as propaganda.
