Homeowners in New York City who live in one- or two-family homes and qualify for STAR or E-STAR tax relief will get a $59.30 rebate check to help cover the cost of the city’s official secure-lidded trash bins.
Who Is Eligible
Owners of one- and two-family properties who receive the Basic or Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR or E-STAR) credit or exemption meet the eligibility criteria. Those who already purchased a city bin online or by phone will receive the rebate automatically through the mail.
What You Need to Do
If you haven’t bought the bin yet, you will receive a letter explaining how to purchase it online or by phone. Once you do, a rebate check will be issued within 30 days. For purchases made in person at certain stores, you’ll be given a voucher code to use online to request your reimbursement.
Why the Rebate and New Bin Rule
A law passed unanimously by the New York City Council requires all residential buildings with between one and nine units to use official trash bins with secure lids. The regulation, effective Nov 2024, imposes a deadline of June 2026 for compliance. The rebate aims to help homeowners comply without financial strain while promoting cleaner streets.
Implementation & Timeline
The city has allocated funds to cover the program. Checks are expected to be mailed in the coming weeks. If you qualify and haven’t seen the rebate by the set timeframe, there will be offices to contact for assistance.
