London Mayor Says Oxford Street Traffic Ban Trial Marks Beginning of “Fightback”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has described the one-day traffic ban trial on part of Oxford Street as the first step in his plan to revive the area by pedestrianising major stretches and restoring its role as a prime shopping and leisure destination.

What the Trial Entails

A trial closing to traffic a half-mile stretch of Oxford Street between Oxford Circus and Orchard Street took place recently. The closure lasted from midday to early evening. The event was intended to give a preview of what a more pedestrian-friendly Oxford Street could look like.

Khan’s Vision and Motivation

Mayor Khan has argued that Oxford Street has been in decline for some time. He refers to this decline as “managed decline,” citing online shopping, economic changes, and the pandemic’s effects. His vision is to transform the space into a place for walking, shopping, outdoor events, and leisure. He believes that pedestrianisation will increase foot traffic, spending, and the overall appeal of the area.

Plans for Full Pedestrianisation

Khan plans to extend the traffic ban to cover a longer stretch between Oxford Circus and Marble Arch, with possible further changes toward Tottenham Court Road. Detailed proposals and consultations are expected later in the year. A Mayoral Development Corporation may be established to give the city the necessary planning powers.

Reactions and Challenges

Some local residents have expressed concerns about congestion, accessibility, and the effects of rerouting buses and taxis. Khan says he understands these worries and that authorities have consulted people living in the area. Businesses and landowners are also being involved to ensure that the changes work for all stakeholders.
